Harrie Smolders could finally cross something of his bucket list: his very first victory in the Grand Prix of Maastricht.

Harrie Smolders could finally cross something of his bucket list: his very first victory in the Grand Prix of Maastricht. In a thrilling jump-off that turned into a true showdown between international top riders, Smolders secured his first major victory with Mr. Tac. Laura Kraut fought her way to the second-fastest time, with Pieter Devos following closely behind.

"Jumping Indoor Maastricht is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric competitions in the Netherlands," Smolders says contentedly. "It has a four-star status but radiates five-star quality in every way: stunning decorations and a fantastic atmosphere." This victory was particularly special for Smolders as it was his first time standing on the highest podium in Maastricht, and also his first win with Mr. Tac at this level. "Indoor competitions seem to suit Mr. Tac well. In the jump-off, you can really use his capabilities. The length of his stride to the last jump was amazing, he really stretches out. He's a true specialist against the clock – he knows the game inside and out," says Harrie Smolders about his 12-year-old Toulon gelding.

Jump-off with Olympic medalists
The crowd was on the edge of their seats, ready for a jump-off where Olympic riders would face off for top honours. Behind Smolders, American rider Laura Kraut secured second place with Bisquetta. Kraut rode with full commitment and, with a sharp jump-off round, pushed Belgian rider Pieter Devos into third place. Devos treated the audience to two solid rounds aboard Primo DV. The fourth place went to Kim Emmen with Imagine, who proved her class again with two flawless rounds. Marc Houtzager had the crowd cheering early on when he was the first to reach the jump-off. With a flying start, he set the tone, but a jumping fault prevented him from making it to the podium, leaving him with the fifth prize.
