After a thrilling jump-off, Harrie Smolders finally checked one off his wish list, his first-ever win in the Grand Prix of Maastricht. In a showdown that turned into a true clash of titans among international stars, Smolders also secured his first major victory with Mr. Tac. Laura Kraut fought her way to second place with an all-out ride, closely followed by Pieter Devos in third.
“Jumping Indoor Maastricht is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric shows in the Netherlands,” said a delighted Smolders. “It has a four-star rating, but everything about it feels five-star, the decoration, the atmosphere, the energy.”
For Smolders, the win was special not only because it was his first on the top step of the podium in Maastricht, but also because it marked his first major success with Mr. Tac at this level.
“Indoor shows really seem to suit Mr. Tac. In a jump-off, you can really use his abilities. His stride to the last fence was incredible — he just stretches out and gives everything. Against the clock, he’s a real specialist — he knows the game inside out,” praised Smolders of his 12-year-old Toulon gelding.
A Jump-Off with Olympic Flair
The crowd was on the edge of their seats for a jump-off filled with (former) Olympic riders giving it their all. Behind Smolders, American rider Laura Kraut secured second place aboard Bisquetta, riding an aggressive and precise round that pushed Belgian rider Pieter Devos into third with Primo DV, after two consistent clear performances throughout the show.
Kim Emmen took fourth with Imagine, once again proving her class with a double clear performance. Earlier in the class, Marc Houtzager brought the crowd to their feet as the first to jump a clear round in the main course. With a flying start, he set the tone for the competition, but a single rail down in the jump-off kept him off the podium, leaving him in fifth place.
